When it comes to wastewater treatment, there are four different ways for providers to charge for their services:
- By the gallon
- By the size of the truck tank
- By the load (transportation and disposal)
- By weight of each load

But what does that mean for you? Why is it important, and why should you care? It all goes back to the questions about how you’re being charged and for what, exactly.
Many wastewater treatment facilities don’t use the weight method because they don’t own scales. Instead, their truck drivers determine the load volume based on the size of the truck’s tank and what their drivers guess they load. First off, this creates an inherent conflict of interest. Second, you need to check every tank before the driver loads your waste material. There’s a chance that remnants of another customer’s waste are still in the tank, and you’ll be the one paying for its treatment. And check the tanker after it’s loaded too. You want to be sure it is filled to its legal capacity – you don’t want to pay for a full load when the tanker is only half full!
Or they may charge by the load. But what constitutes a load? A full tanker? One trip to your facility? If it’s the latter, then you may be paying the same price for vastly different amounts of wastewater, depending on what you generate in a given time period and how full the driver fills his tanker. Basically, different providers and drivers have different definitions of a load, and it may not be the same definition you’d use. So there’s no sure way to tell if you’re getting what you pay for, or if you’re paying for more than you’re actually getting.
